Was that her outside voice?

So, the point of the blog is to record the minutae of our daily life, for posterity right? We want to preserve the memories that otherwise escape us, not because they are insignificant but because they aren't the major milestones of childhood and family life. Now this is one of those blogs that my daughters will read in ten years and silently (or not so silently) curse the fact that their mother is a writer with a very little social filter. This is one of those blogs where you may walk away thinking, "too much information." Maybe so, but I suspect many of you have also experienced these laugh out loud moments and I want to remember these laugh out loud moments and so here is is....for posterity.

Scene: 8:30pm (already running 1/2 hour past bedtime and no one is in bed). Jason is walking upstairs armed with a bedtime sippy cup for Lily, I'm trying to find clean clothes that match to set out for school tomorrow. Madeleine is in the bathroom, door wide open of course, Lily is trying to negotiate wearing the Snow White ball gown to bed instead of pajamas.

Madeleine: Mommy, will you wipe me?
Kerry: Daddy will do it, my hands are full.
Jason: I'll do it Madeleine.
Lily: No, I'll wipe you sweetie.

End Scene.

After laughing so hard it was my turn to use the potty.

Open Mic Night at the Rupe's

Tonight was all about dress up and making up dances. We know if they're anything like their mom and dad, we're in for many nights of "hey do you want to watch our show?" And so, here is the first of many shows brought live to you tonight. Sit back and and enjoy the musical stylings of Madeleine Rupe - and if you look closely, you may catch a glimpse of the dancing frog.

Driving Miss Crazy (and her crazy redheaded sister)

Each day I pick the girls up from preschool, the conversation is pretty much the same. I ask what they did at school, they say nothing. I ask if they drew pictures or read stories, they say no. I'm glad I'm getting my money's worth. After they finish their "car snack" and we fight over song choices....Radio Disney or High School Musical soundtrack, we get into the good conversation. Today's was pretty funny.

I'm driving....I hear a loud thump from something being hurled at the back window.
Madeleine: "Mommy, Lily threw her doll"
Me: "Lily, we do not throw things in the car, that is dangerous and that scared mommy!" I look in the rearview mirror at the wasteland that is my backseat.
Me: "Okay, we're going to get out of the habit of throwing our toys on the floor in the car when we're done. The next thing that is thrown on the floor, mommy will take and put in a bag."
Madeleine: "And give it to kids without toys?"
Oh - good idea!
Me: "Yes!"
Madeleine: "do they have arms?"
huh?
Me: "Yes, the kids have arms."
Madeleine: "Do they have legs?"
Me: "Yes, they have legs."
Madeleine: "Oh. (pause) They just don't have toys." I'm sure she's thinking, they have arms and legs so their not that unfortunate.
Me: "that is right."
Madeleine: "How come they have arms and legs and no toys?"
Me: "Well, most children have arms and legs, but some children are not as lucky as you. They don't have extra money to spend on toys."
Madeleine: (exasperated) "Well, they can just go to Walmart and get toys (sigh!)"

She's right. Walmart is one of your more affordable outlets for toys - I can't really argue with that and so I don't, I quickly change the subject.

Me: "Look girls, we're getting off the freeway, we're in Chino Hills!"
Lily: "Oh I LOVE Gino Mills!"

Disneyland for Dinner

An impromptu evening at Disneyland; what a way to finish out the week! We had a big day today and after naps and baths, mommy surprised the girls with a special treat. I told them we were going someplace special and Madeleine asked, "McDonalds!?" When I answered it was better than McDonalds, she looked perplexed. What could possibly be better than McDonalds? She thought for a minute and then squealed, "Disneyland?" When I said yes, high pitched screams ensued, then running through the house, bumping into each other, crashing to the floor, laughing, getting up only to fall down again in a heap of giggles. We haven't been since December so this really was a special treat. I don't know how it comes to be that you get there, you go on two rides, you have an ice cream cone and all of a sudden you've been there four hours? The girls didn't seem to mind that we didn't exactly hit every ride. They hit their favorites, Casey Jr. Circus train, luckily we scored the pink, Monkey Cage....the teacups, luck was on our side again when we got the pink teacup, and actually if you count the tram (there and back), we went on quite a few rides. We somehow dodged a big bullet with Small World being closed for renovation (apparently you will soon be able to eat all the massive turkey legs you want and still be able to ride comfortably in the Small World boats). Lily accepted that we would go on Small World at Christmastime, good thing a two year old has not concept of time. The Tiki Room is still a no-go (drums are too loud); Haunted Mansion is a no (we like to listen to Jack Skellington's music but we don't want to SEE him); Alice in Wonderland doesn't make the cut because the Queen is scary and she reaches out towards you; Storybookland and Toontown were both closed; Nemo is a no, due to the scarcely seen shark, the Ferris Wheel at California Adventure is too high and the gunshot on The Jungle Cruise is too loud. Yet, somehow we still had a lot of fun!

An Evening at the Big D!

Is Lily excited about Disneyland?

Now she realizes where she is!

Oh Maddy, do you think the pink teacup will be ours?

Spring Break Movie Night

I thought you said you were getting us popcorn?

Sweet Lily Paige and Beautiful Madeleine Jane

My beautiful baby girls

Spring Break - Girls Gone Wild?

So it's day two of Spring Break and girls gone wild has taken on a new meaning to me. My girls are acting like wild animals, sick w/ spring fever! Maybe it's a combination of mommy being home, no school, Cookie Crisp cereal for breakfast every morning and late nights watching Ariel. Whatever it is, I'm enjoying it. They couldn't be more adorable as they boss each other around, fight over the yellow sidewalk chalk, blame each other for water on the floor and end the evening shampooed, jammied, and eating popcorn together on the loveseat for their late night (8:30pm) movie screening. Sisters can be so cute, even when they are exasperating each other. I know they won't remember these little moments, so I want to record it for them. They just finished a dance party in the loft, challenging one another to "shake your bootie". I promised popcorn and staying up a little late and so here we are, enjoying some sisterly bonding and some Little Mermaid. I hope Spring Break slows down a little and the days don't get behind us too fast because we three girls just wanna have fun!
